Grammar
-ed and -ing adjectives
Adjectives ending in -ed describe how a person feels: I am bored. She is excited. They are tired. Adjectives ending in -ing describe what causes the feeling: The film is boring. The news is exciting. The lesson is tiring.
Pairs: bored / boring, excited / exciting, interested / interesting, tired / tiring, surprised / surprising, worried / worrying, relaxed / relaxing, confused / confusing.
I’m bored. The film is boring.
She is excited about the trip.
The news was surprising.
He is interested in music because it is interesting.
Make + object + adjective
We use “make” + person + adjective to say what causes a feeling: Music makes me happy. The sea makes her calm. Your voice makes me feel safe. That news made them sad.
We can use “feel” after “make” for emphasis: This song makes me feel relaxed. Not “makes me to be happy”.
Music makes me happy.
The sea makes her calm.
Your voice makes me feel safe.
The news made them sad.
Talking about feelings
Ask: How are you feeling? What’s wrong? Are you OK? Why are you sad? Answer: I feel… I’m a bit… I’m really… Because… I’m worried about… I’m looking forward to… Offer support: I’m here for you. Do you want to talk? Take your time. It will be OK.
Useful: to feel like + -ing (I feel like walking), to cheer up (Let’s cheer you up), to calm down (Calm down, please), to cry, to laugh.
How are you feeling today?
I’m a bit worried about my exam.
I’m here for you. Do you want to talk?
Let’s cheer you up!
