Grammar
Adverbs of manner
Adverbs of manner say HOW we do something. We make most of them by adding -ly to an adjective: slow – slowly, careful – carefully, quiet – quietly. They usually go after the verb: She walks slowly. He speaks clearly.
Some are irregular: good – WELL, fast – fast, hard – hard, late – late. She plays well. He runs fast. They work hard.
She walks slowly and carefully.
He speaks clearly and quietly.
My brother swims very well.
They work hard every day.
Comparing adverbs
To compare how we do things: short adverbs take -er / -est: faster, the fastest, harder, the hardest. Long adverbs use more / most: more carefully, the most carefully. Irregular: well – better – the best.
Use “than” to compare two: He runs faster than I do. She swims more slowly than her brother. And “as… as” for equal: I walk as fast as my friend.
He runs faster than I do.
She walks more slowly than me.
My friend swims the best in our group.
I can’t run as fast as my brother.
Good at, bad at
To talk about skills, we use “good at” + noun or -ing: I’m good at swimming. She is bad at maths. He is very good at listening.
The opposite is “bad at” or “not very good at”. For liking: I’m interested in running. I’m afraid of falling. After a preposition, we always use the -ing form.
I’m good at swimming.
He is not very good at running.
She is interested in learning to dance.
My sister is afraid of swimming alone.
