Grammar

3.1

Imperatives for instructions

We use the base form of the verb to give instructions: Open the app. Press the button. Turn on the screen reader. For the negative we use “Don’t”: Don’t press that button!

To be polite, add “please”: Please open the menu. In writing and speaking, instructions are short and clear: one action = one sentence.

Open the settings.
Swipe right to go to the next item.
Don’t forget your password.
Please turn the volume down.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: наказовий спосіб = базова форма дієслова: Open! Press! Заперечення: Don’t + дієслово. Ввічливо — please.
3.2

Sequence words

When we explain a process, we use sequence words: First, … Then, … Next, … After that, … Finally, … These words help the listener follow the steps in the right order.

Put a comma after most of them: First, open the app. Then, tap “Search”. Finally, say the name of the song.

First, turn on your phone.
Then, open the music app.
Next, say the name of the song.
Finally, press play and enjoy the music.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: first — спочатку, then — потім, next — далі, after that — після цього, finally — нарешті.
3.3

Asking for help: How do I…?

To ask how to do something, we say “How do I…?” or “How can I…?” For polite help: “Can you show me how to…?” “Could you help me, please?”

Useful answers: Just press… You need to… Try this… It’s easy! After a problem: It doesn’t work. I can’t open it. The sound is too quiet.

How do I turn on the screen reader?
Can you show me how to send a message?
Could you help me, please? I can’t open the app.
It doesn’t work. What should I do?
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: How do I…? — Як мені…? Can you show me how to…? — Можеш показати, як…? It doesn’t work. — Не працює.
