Grammar
Giving directions
We use imperatives to give directions: Go straight on. Turn left. Take the second street on the right. Cross the road. Stop at the bus stop.
Useful phrases: at the corner, at the traffic lights, on the left, on the right, straight ahead, it’s about two minutes from here. Count steps or streets if you cannot see: Take the second street on the right.
Go straight on and turn left at the corner.
Take the second street on the right.
The bakery is next to the bank.
It’s about five minutes on foot from here.
Prepositions of movement
Prepositions of movement show direction: along (the street), across (the road), through (the park), past (the shop), up / down (the stairs), into / out of (the building), to (the station).
Go along this street, past the bakery, and across the road. Walk up the stairs and through the door.
Walk along this street and past the bakery.
Go across the road at the crossing.
Go up the stairs and through the door.
He walked into the shop and came out with a loaf of bread.
Could you tell me…? Polite questions
For a polite question to a stranger, we use “Could you tell me…?” After this phrase, the word order is like a statement: Could you tell me where the station is? (NOT where is the station).
Other polite forms: Excuse me, how do I get to…? Is there a pharmacy near here? Can you help me, please? Thank them: Thank you very much. That’s very kind.
Excuse me, could you tell me where the post office is?
Could you tell me how to get to the market?
Is there a pharmacy near here?
Could you help me cross the road, please?
