Grammar

3.1

Be used to / get used to + -ing

“Be used to” + -ing means “it is normal for me, it is not strange anymore”: I’m used to using a screen reader. I’m not used to getting up early. “Get used to” means “become used to”: I’m getting used to this new phone.

Do not mix with “used to + infinitive” (a past habit): I used to live in Kyiv. = in the past. I’m used to living in a city. = it is normal for me now.

I’m used to using a screen reader every day.
She isn’t used to the new phone yet.
I’m getting used to talking to my smart speaker.
He used to write letters, but now he sends messages.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: be used to + -ing — звик(ла). get used to — звикати. used to + інфінітив — раніше робив. I’m used to waking up early.
3.2

Phrasal verbs with devices

turn on / off – switch on / off: Turn the light on. Turn it off. turn up / down – louder or quieter: Turn the volume up. plug in / unplug – connect / disconnect: Plug in the charger. log in / out – enter or leave an account. look up – search: Look up the word. set up – prepare: Set up the alarm.

Remember: with pronouns, we say “turn it on”, not “turn on it”.

Please turn the radio off.
Turn the volume down a little.
I need to plug in my phone.
Can you look up the word for me?
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: turn on / off — вмикати / вимикати, turn up / down — гучніше / тихіше, plug in — підключити, look up — знайти, set up — налаштувати.
3.3

Superlatives with ever

We often use a superlative + the present perfect with “ever” to say the best, worst, most, etc. in our experience: This is the best app I have ever used. It is the most useful gift I’ve ever received. That was the worst phone call I have ever had.

Structure: the + superlative + noun + I’ve ever + past participle.

This is the best app I have ever used.
It was the funniest film I’ve ever seen.
She is the kindest person I’ve ever met.
That was the loudest concert I have ever been to.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: the best … I’ve ever + 3-тя форма — найкраще, що я будь-коли… This is the best app I’ve ever used.
