Grammar

3.1

Phrasal verbs

A phrasal verb is a verb + a small word (up, out, after, on). The meaning is often new. look after = take care of: I look after my dog. take out = go outside with: I take my dog out twice a day. pick up = lift or collect: I pick up the leash. give up = stop. find out = discover.

Some are inseparable: look after my cat (NOT look my cat after). Some are separable: pick up the bowl / pick the bowl up.

I look after my neighbour’s cat.
I take my dog out every morning.
Please pick up the bowl.
We found out that the dog was lost.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: phrasal verb = дієслово + частка: look after — доглядати, take out — виводити, pick up — піднімати, give up — кидати, find out — з’ясувати.
3.2

Separable phrasal verbs

With separable phrasal verbs, a noun can go in the middle or after: pick up the bowl / pick the bowl up. But a pronoun (it, them, him) must go in the middle: pick it up (NOT pick up it). Take them out. Turn it on.

Inseparable verbs never split: look after the cat → look after it (NOT look it after).

Pick the bowl up. / Pick up the bowl.
Pick it up, please.
Take the dogs out. / Take them out.
Look after it carefully.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: pick up the bowl = pick the bowl up. Але займенник — тільки всередині: pick it up (не pick up it). look after — не розділяється.
3.3

Animal sounds and behaviour

Animal sounds: a dog barks, a cat meows and purrs, a bird sings, a cow moos, a horse neighs, a bee buzzes, a lion roars, a mouse squeaks. Describe behaviour: The dog wags its tail when it is happy. The cat purrs when it is relaxed.

Animals help us too: guide dogs, therapy animals, working horses. They are loyal, clever and gentle.

The dog barks at the door.
The cat purrs on my lap.
A guide dog helps its owner every day.
Birds sing in the morning.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: bark — гавкати, meow — нявкати, purr — муркотіти, sing — співати, moo — мукати. Guide dog — собака-поводир.
