Grammar

3.1

Numbers and prices

Say prices clearly: €2.50 = two euros fifty. £10 = ten pounds. $15.99 = fifteen ninety-nine. 100 = a hundred, 1,000 = a thousand. Use “How much is…?” or “How much does… cost?”

Careful with similar sounds: thirteen / thirty, fourteen / forty, fifteen / fifty. In thirteen the stress is on the end (thir-TEEN). In thirty the stress is at the start (THIR-ty).

It costs two euros fifty.
How much does this cost?
This phone is three hundred euros.
Thirteen or thirty? Please say it again.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: €2.50 = two euros fifty. thirteen / thirty — різний наголос: thirTEEN, THIRty. How much does it cost?
3.2

More, less, fewer

MORE can be used with both: more money, more people. LESS is for uncountable nouns: less money, less time, less sugar. FEWER is for countable nouns: fewer people, fewer coins, fewer bills.

We also say “the most” and “the least”: I spend the most on food and the least on clothes.

I have less money than my brother.
There are fewer people in the shop today.
You should spend less time on your phone.
I spend the most on food.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: less — для незлічуваних (money, time), fewer — для злічуваних (people, coins). more — для обох.
3.3

Need to / don’t need to

We use “need to” for something necessary: I need to pay the bill. “Don’t need to” means it is not necessary: You don’t need to buy a ticket. Compare: “mustn’t” = it is forbidden.

Questions: Do I need to pay now? What do I need to bring? We can also say “need” + noun: I need some money. I need help.

I need to pay the bill today.
You don’t need to bring cash.
Do I need to sign here?
I need some help with this form.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: need to — потрібно, don’t need to — не потрібно. mustn’t — заборонено. need + іменник: I need help.
