Grammar

3.1

Present perfect for experience

We use the present perfect (have / has + past participle) to talk about experience in our life, without saying when: I have worked in a school. She has met many people. Have you ever worked in a team?

Negative: I haven’t worked in a bank. Short answers: Yes, I have. / No, I haven’t. Use ever in questions and never in negatives: I have never been to an interview.

I have worked in a school for two years.
She has met many interesting people.
Have you ever had an interview?
I have never worked in a bank.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: have / has + 3-тя форма дієслова — досвід. Have you ever…? I have never… Short answer: Yes, I have.
3.2

For and since

We use FOR with a period of time: for two years, for a long time, for three months. We use SINCE with a point in time: since 2020, since Monday, since I was a child.

Question: How long have you worked here? — I’ve worked here for five years. / I’ve worked here since 2020.

I have worked here for three years.
She has lived here since 2019.
How long have you studied English?
I’ve known him since we were children.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: for + період (for two years), since + момент (since 2020). How long have you…? — Як давно ти…?
3.3

Interview questions

Typical questions: Tell me about yourself. What are your strengths? Why do you want this job? What experience do you have? Where do you see yourself in five years? Do you have any questions for us?

Useful answers: I’m good at working with people. I have experience in… I’m a fast learner. In five years I’d like to… Thank you for your time.

Tell me about yourself.
Why do you want this job?
I’m good at listening and solving problems.
Thank you for your time.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: Tell me about yourself — Розкажіть про себе. I’m a fast learner — я швидко вчуся. Thank you for your time — дякую за ваш час.
