Grammar

3.1

Would rather

“Would rather” means “prefer”. It is followed by the base form of the verb (no “to”): I’d rather listen to the radio. She’d rather stay at home. Question: Would you rather sing or dance?

Negative: I’d rather not go. To compare: I’d rather read than watch TV.

I’d rather listen to music than watch TV.
She’d rather stay at home tonight.
Would you rather have tea or coffee?
I’d rather not go to a loud concert.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: would rather + дієслово (без to) = краще б. I’d rather listen… than…
3.2

So do I / Neither do I

To agree with a positive sentence we say “So do I” (for present simple), “So am I” (for be), “So can I” (for can): I love jazz. — So do I. I’m tired. — So am I.

To agree with a negative: Neither do I / Neither am I / Neither can I: I don’t like loud music. — Neither do I. To disagree: I don’t. / I do. I love jazz. — I don’t.

I love folk music. — So do I.
I can’t sing. — Neither can I.
I’m not very musical. — Neither am I.
I like rock music. — I don’t.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: So do I — Я теж (після ствердження), Neither do I — Я теж ні (після заперечення). I don’t / I do — не погоджуюся.
3.3

Giving opinions

Useful phrases: I think… In my opinion… I believe… For me… I like it because… It’s too loud for me. It makes me feel…

To compare: This song is better than that one. Her voice is more beautiful than his. This is the best song I know.

In my opinion, this song is wonderful.
I think it’s too loud for me.
For me, music is a good friend.
This is the best song I know.
