Grammar

3.1

Like, love, enjoy, hate + -ing

After like, love, enjoy, hate and don’t mind, we usually use the -ing form of the verb: I like cooking. She loves baking bread. We enjoy eating together. He hates washing up.

From most to least: love > like > don’t mind > don’t like > hate. For a question: Do you enjoy cooking? What do you like doing on Sunday?

I love smelling fresh coffee.
My mum enjoys baking in winter.
He doesn’t like washing dishes.
Do you mind waiting a few minutes?
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: like / love / enjoy / hate + дієслово-ing: I like cooking. Do you enjoy cooking?
3.2

Would like — polite offers and wishes

“Would like” is more polite than “want”. We use it for offers and requests: Would you like some tea? I’d like a glass of water, please.

Structure: would like + noun (I’d like a coffee) or would like + to + verb (I’d like to try this soup). Do not use -ing after would like.

Would you like some more soup?
I’d like a cup of tea, please.
I’d like to taste that cake.
What would you like to eat today?
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: would like = хотів би (ввічливо). I’d like + іменник або to + дієслово. Не would like cooking.
3.3

Prefer

Prefer means “like one thing more than another.” We say: I prefer tea to coffee. I prefer walking to driving. Or with “to + verb”: I prefer to cook at home.

In questions: Which do you prefer, tea or coffee? Do you prefer sweet or salty food?

I prefer tea to coffee.
She prefers cooking at home to eating out.
Which do you prefer, soup or salad?
We prefer to eat dinner together.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: prefer A to B — віддавати перевагу A, а не B. Which do you prefer?
