Grammar

3.1

Should and shouldn’t — advice

We use “should” to give advice or say what is a good idea. “Should” is a modal verb, so it has no -s and is followed by the base verb: You should rest. She should see a doctor.

Negative: shouldn’t (should not): You shouldn’t work so much. Question: Should I call the doctor? What should I do?

Other ways to give advice: Why don’t you…? If I were you, I’d… You’d better… (stronger).

You should drink more water.
You shouldn’t go to bed late.
Should I take this medicine with food?
If I were you, I’d see a doctor.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: should + інфінітив — порада. Заперечення: shouldn’t. If I were you, I’d… — На твоєму місці я б…
3.2

Must, mustn’t, have to, don’t have to

“Must” and “have to” both express obligation. “Must” often comes from the speaker (a personal rule or strong advice): I must call my mother. “Have to” is about rules or external obligation: I have to wear a mask in the hospital. In the past we use “had to”.

Be careful with negatives! “Mustn’t” means it is forbidden: You mustn’t smoke here. “Don’t have to” means it is not necessary: You don’t have to come early; the doctor is not busy.

Questions: Do I have to make an appointment? Does he have to stay in bed?

You must take this medicine every day.
I have to see the doctor on Monday.
You mustn’t drive when you are very tired.
You don’t have to pay for the test.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: must / have to — обов’язок. mustn’t — заборонено. don’t have to — не обов’язково. Минулий час: had to.
3.3

Talking to a doctor or a pharmacist

Describe the problem: I have a headache. My back hurts. I feel dizzy. I’ve got a temperature. How long: It started two days ago. I’ve had it since Monday. Questions you can ask: How often should I take it? Are there any side effects? Do I have to stay in bed? When should I come back?

I don’t feel well. I have a sore throat.
It started three days ago.
How many times a day should I take this?
Do I need a prescription?
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: Опиши проблему: I have a …, My … hurts, I feel dizzy. Запитай: How often should I take it? Are there any side effects?
