Grammar

3.1

Present simple — habits and routines

We use the present simple for things we do regularly, for facts and for permanent situations. The verb is in its base form: I work, you work, we work, they work.

With he, she and it we add -s: he works, she lives, it rains. After -s, -sh, -ch, -x and -o we add -es: she watches, he goes, it fixes. After a consonant + y, we change y to ies: study → studies, try → tries.

Negatives: use don’t (do not) or doesn’t (does not) + base verb: I don’t eat meat. He doesn’t eat meat. Never add -s after doesn’t. Questions: Do you…? Does she…? and the answer: Yes, I do. No, she doesn’t.

I get up at six thirty.
She works in a bank. She doesn’t work on Sundays.
Does he drink coffee in the morning? — Yes, he does.
What time do you start work?
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: Present Simple — для звичок і фактів. he/she/it + s (works, goes, studies). Заперечення й питання з do/does + дієслово БЕЗ -s.
3.2

Adverbs of frequency

These words say how often something happens. From 100% to 0%: always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never.

Position: before the main verb (“I always drink tea”), but after the verb “to be” (“She is never late”). “Sometimes” can also go at the beginning or the end of the sentence.

We can also use time expressions: every day, once a week, twice a month, three times a year, on Mondays, at the weekend. They usually go at the end of the sentence.

I always check my messages in the morning.
He is usually at home on Sundays.
We sometimes eat out on Fridays.
How often do you visit your grandparents? — Twice a month.
🇺🇦 Коротко українською: always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never — перед основним дієсловом, але після to be. How often…? — як часто?
