Is the gig economy freedom or insecurity?
Is the gig economy freedom or insecurity? Platforms such as ride-hailing and food-delivery apps have created millions of short jobs. The model began to spread widely after the late 2000s, and consequently many people now earn part of their income through an app.
For many workers, the main attraction is flexibility. A student can drive in the evening, a parent can work between school hours, and nobody has to ask a manager for permission. This freedom has led to a rapid rise in people who combine several sources of income.
Nevertheless, the disadvantages are considerable. Gig workers are usually classified as self-employed, which means that they often receive no sick pay, paid holidays or pension contributions. Owing to the lack of a regular income, many report a sense of insecurity. Some earn less than the minimum wage once costs are deducted, although estimates vary widely between countries and platforms.
The law has begun to respond. In 2021, the UK Supreme Court ruled that a group of Uber drivers should be treated as "workers", not as independent contractors, which gave them certain rights such as paid leave. Other courts and legislators have reached different conclusions, and in 2024 the European Union adopted rules on platform work intended to make it easier to establish employment status. The debate has also given rise to proposals for a new category between employee and freelancer.
So is it freedom or insecurity? For some, in some periods of life, it is the first; for others, it leads to the second. What is at issue is who bears the risk: the worker or the platform.
Would you accept lower security for greater freedom?

- What would a fair system look like?
