Why are bees so important?

There are around 20,000 species of bees in the world. Honey bees are the best known, because they are kept in hives and make honey, but most bee species are wild, and many of them live alone and not in colonies.

Bees are important because they are very good at pollination. When a bee visits a flower for nectar, pollen is carried on its body to the next flower, and the plant can make fruit and seeds. According to international studies, a large part of the main food crops depends, at least in part, on animal pollinators, and bees are among the most important of them.

In some regions, a decline of bees has been reported. Several causes are discussed by scientists: the loss of natural habitats, some types of pesticides, diseases and parasites, and changing weather. The situation is not the same everywhere, and for some species there is not enough data.

The good news is that many things can be done. Flowers can be planted in gardens and on balconies, grass does not have to be cut so often, and the use of harmful chemicals can be reduced. In some countries, rules about pesticides have been made stricter.

Bees are small, but a world without them would be very different.

What is one small thing you could do for bees?

  3. Scientists name only one cause for the decline.
  4. The situation is the same in every region.
  5. The text says flowers can be planted to help bees.
3.3

What do you think?

  1. Why do small animals matter for the whole nature?
  2. Who should do more for bees: farmers, governments or ordinary people?
  3. Would you pay more for food that is made without harmful pesticides?
  4. How can a city become friendlier for insects?
