How were the pyramids built?
The Great Pyramid of Giza was built about 4,500 years ago as a tomb for the pharaoh Khufu. It was originally about 146 metres tall, and for thousands of years it was the tallest human-made structure in the world. Estimates say that it contains about 2.3 million stone blocks.
For a long time, people imagined that slaves had been forced to build it. However, archaeologists have found the remains of a workers' town near the pyramids, with bakeries and places where beer was made, and simple graves of workers next to the monuments. These discoveries suggest that the builders were organised, fed and respected labourers.
How were the blocks moved? In 2013 archaeologists found papyrus documents, which are often called the diary of a man named Merer. They show that boats had been used to carry limestone along the Nile to the building site. Ways of lifting the blocks are still discussed, and ramps are the most popular explanation, although experts disagree about their shape.
By the time the pyramid was finished, thousands of workers had spent years on the project, and the Egyptians had learned a great deal about planning, measuring and organising people.
The pyramid is a reminder that many questions in history are answered step by step, as new evidence appears.
