Why is Venice sinking?
Venice is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, but it is also one of the most vulnerable. It stands on more than a hundred small islands in a lagoon, and its buildings are supported by wooden piles driven into the soft ground.
The city is sinking in two ways. The land has been going down slowly for centuries, by a small amount every year. In the twentieth century the problem became worse when large amounts of water were pumped out of the ground nearby. That pumping has now stopped, but the sea is rising because of climate change. As a result, floods, which are known as "acqua alta", have become more frequent.
In November 2019, the water reached about 187 centimetres, one of the highest levels ever recorded, and the city was badly damaged. Since 2020, a system of mobile barriers called MOSE has been used to close the lagoon during high tides.
However, the barriers are only part of the answer. Scientists warn that they cannot be used too often, and many residents, who have lived in the city all their lives, are leaving. Saving Venice means protecting both the buildings and the community.
Do you know a place which is at risk?
True or false?
- Venice stands on islands in a lagoon.
- The city is sinking only because of the sea.
- Pumping water out of the ground made the problem worse.
- The MOSE barriers solve the problem completely.
- Some residents are leaving the city.
What do you think?
- What is the best way to protect a historic city?
- Would you live in a city that floods?
- Who should pay to protect a place like Venice: residents, tourists or governments?
- Which other cities are in danger?

Defining relative clauses
Use who for people, which or that for things, whose for possession and where for places. A defining clause gives essential information and has no commas.
The people who live there are worried. The barrier that closes the lagoon is called MOSE. A city whose buildings are old needs care. The square where the water rises is famous.
Leaving out the pronoun
When the pronoun is the object of the clause, you can leave it out. A preposition often stays at the end.
The city (that) I visited was beautiful. The man (who) I talked to lives there. The boat we went on was old.
