Does money buy happiness?

Does money buy happiness? Researchers have been asking this for decades, and the answer has changed more than once.

In 2010, the psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Angus Deaton published a well-known study of Americans. It suggested that emotional well-being rose with income up to about 75,000 dollars a year, and then stopped rising. This result was repeated in many newspapers.

In 2021, Matthew Killingsworth found a different pattern: happiness kept rising with income, even at high levels. The researchers then worked together to explain the difference. Their joint results, published in 2023, suggest that for most people happiness continues to rise with income. For a smaller group of people who are the unhappiest, it seems to rise up to a certain point, about 100,000 dollars, and then stop.

Why can money have this effect? It can reduce stress about bills, give people more control over their lives and buy time. However, it cannot replace relationships or a sense of purpose. Because of this, many researchers advise spending money on experiences and on other people, not only on things.

So money does not guarantee happiness, but it can make life easier. The question may be less "how much?" than "what for?".

  1. Why might money make people happier up to a point?
  2. What things can't money buy?
