What is burnout?

The word "burnout" is used so often today that it sounds modern. In fact, it was introduced by the American psychologist Herbert Freudenberger in 1974. He noticed that dedicated people who helped others, such as nurses and social workers, often became exhausted and lost their motivation.

In 2019, burnout was included in the World Health Organization's international classification of diseases, but it is described as an "occupational phenomenon", not as a medical condition. According to the WHO, it is caused by chronic stress at work that has not been successfully managed.

Three main signs are mentioned: feelings of exhaustion, growing mental distance from the job or a cynical attitude to it, and reduced professional performance.

Burnout cannot be solved by one holiday. Experts say that the workload must be reviewed, and that employees should be given clear boundaries and support. If the symptoms are serious, a doctor or a mental-health professional should be consulted.

Have you ever felt this tired of work or study?
