How do you keep your English after a course?
In the 1880s, a German psychologist named Hermann Ebbinghaus did a strange experiment on himself. He learnt long lists of nonsense syllables, like "DAX" and "BOK", and then tested how many he could remember after minutes, hours and days.
The results gave us the famous "forgetting curve". Ebbinghaus found that we forget new information very quickly at first: a big part of it can be gone within a day or two if we don't review it. After that, forgetting slows down.
But he also discovered the solution. Every time he reviewed the material, the curve became flatter: he forgot more slowly. Reviewing at increasing intervals, for example after one day, then three days, then a week, then a month, is now called "spaced repetition". Many language apps are based on this idea.
For speaking, there's one more rule: use it or lose it. Words and grammar we only read stay passive. Words we actually say, in real conversations, become part of us. That's why the best way to keep your English after a course is to keep talking: with a teacher, a friend, a colleague, or even yourself in the mirror.
So don't think of the end of this course as an ending. Think of it as your first review on the curve.
True or false?
