What happens when companies work four days a week?
Imagine getting the same salary for working four days instead of five. In 2022, about 60 companies in the UK, with nearly 3,000 employees, tried exactly that in a six-month trial. The organisers called it "100-80-100": 100% of the pay, for 80% of the time, in exchange for 100% of the productivity.
The results were impressive. At the end of the trial, the large majority of the companies decided to continue with the four-day week, and some made it permanent. Many employees reported less stress and burnout, better sleep and more time for family and hobbies. On average, company revenue stayed about the same.
How did they do it? Companies cut long meetings, reduced distractions, and focused on the most important tasks. Some staff said they worked more efficiently because they valued their extra day off.
Critics point out that a four-day week is easier for office jobs than for hospitals, schools or shops, where someone has to be there every day. Some workers also found the four longer days tiring. And trials are often done by companies that are already interested in the idea, so the results might not work everywhere.
Still, the experiment shows that work-life balance isn't only about personal choices. How organisations design work matters too.
True or false?
- About 60 UK companies tried a four-day week.

What do you think?
- Would a four-day week work in your job? Why or why not?

- Which meetings or tasks at your work could be cut?
- Is work-life balance a personal choice or a company responsibility?
