Why do we stay up late when we're tired?

It's midnight. You're exhausted. You have to get up at seven. And yet, you're still scrolling, watching "just one more episode", or reading the news. Sound familiar? There's now a name for it: "revenge bedtime procrastination".

The term became popular online around 2020, after it spread from Chinese social media. The idea is that people who have little control over their day, because of long working hours, children or stress, "take revenge" by stealing time back at night. Those late hours feel like the only time that belongs to them.

The problem is that the price is high. In a well-known study published in 2003, researchers limited people's sleep to six hours a night for two weeks. By the end, their attention and reaction times were about as bad as those of people who had not slept at all for a whole night. The surprising part: they didn't feel that bad. They thought they had got used to it, but their tests said otherwise.

Lack of sleep is linked to stress, weaker immunity, weight gain and mood problems. And stress makes it harder to sleep, so it can become a vicious circle.

Sleep experts suggest a regular bedtime routine, no screens for the last hour, and, most importantly, finding some "me time" during the day, so the night doesn't have to be the only time you feel free.

"Schools and offices should start later."

Ideas for

Many people are night owls. Teenagers' bodies naturally sleep later. Well-rested people learn and work better. Fewer accidents and mistakes.

Ideas against

Families need children to start early so parents can go to work. Later starts mean later finishes and less free time. People can adapt by going to bed earlier.

Round 1: give your real opinion for 1–2 minutes. Round 2: defend the opposite side for 1 minute. Use: Research shows that... · We should have... long ago · If people sleep more, ... · I'm not convinced that...
