When do tourists become a problem?
In the summer of 2024, something unusual happened in Barcelona. Thousands of residents marched through the city centre, and some of them sprayed tourists with water pistols. Their message: there are too many of you. Similar protests have taken place in Mallorca, the Canary Islands and other popular destinations.
Why are locals angry? In many cities, flats in the centre are turned into short-term rentals for tourists, so rents go up and local people are priced out. Streets are crowded, local shops are replaced by souvenir stores, and in some places, residents feel they are living in a theme park.
Cities are trying different solutions. In 2024, Venice started charging day-trippers a fee to enter the historic centre on busy days. Amsterdam launched a campaign telling certain groups of party tourists to "stay away". Dubrovnik has limited the number of cruise ships, and many cities have introduced or raised tourist taxes.
At the same time, tourism is extremely important for the economy. In many countries, it gives jobs to millions of people, from hotel staff to taxi drivers and artists. For some islands and small towns, it's almost the only source of income.
So the question isn't whether tourism is good or bad, but how to manage it. And travellers can help too: by visiting in the off-season, choosing less famous places, respecting local rules, and spending money in local businesses.
