What should the world know about Ukraine?

For many people around the world, Ukraine became well known only recently, through the news. But the country has a long and rich history, and many surprising facts that most foreigners have never heard.

Kyiv's St Sophia Cathedral was built more than 900 years ago and, together with the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic centre of Lviv, with its coffee houses and narrow streets, is also on the UNESCO list. The Kyiv metro has one of the deepest stations in the world: Arsenalna, more than 100 metres underground.

Ukrainian culture is also protected by UNESCO. Petrykivka decorative painting, with its bright flowers and birds, was added to the list of intangible cultural heritage in 2013. In 2022, the culture of Ukrainian borscht cooking was added to the list of heritage in need of urgent safeguarding.

Ukraine was also home to the An-225 "Mriya", which means "dream". It was the largest plane ever built, and it was famous among aviation fans worldwide. It was destroyed in 2022 at an airfield near Kyiv, and its loss was felt as a symbol by many Ukrainians.

And there is so much more to discover: the primeval beech forests of the Carpathians, the castles of Transcarpathia, the sakura trees blooming in Uzhhorod every spring, and above all, the famous Ukrainian hospitality.

"Tourism is the best way to help a country's image."

Ideas for

Tourists see the real country, not just the news. They share photos and stories. Tourism brings money and creates jobs. People-to-people contact builds friendship.

Ideas against

A country's image is also built by culture, science, sport and business. Tourism can damage heritage. Short trips can give a superficial view. Safety matters more right now.

Round 1: give your real opinion for 1–2 minutes. Round 2: defend the opposite side for 1 minute. Use: Ukraine is known as... · Most people don't know that... · It has been shown that... · I'm proud that...
