Are we more connected, but lonelier?
We have never been so connected. We can video call someone on the other side of the world for free, and we can join groups for every hobby imaginable. And yet many experts say we are living through a "loneliness epidemic".
In 2023, the US Surgeon General, the country's top public health official, published a report about loneliness. It said that about half of American adults had experienced loneliness, and that lacking social connection can be as harmful to health as smoking up to fifteen cigarettes a day. Loneliness is linked to a higher risk of heart disease, depression and dementia.
Other countries have taken the problem seriously too. In 2018, the UK appointed a Minister for Loneliness, and Japan did the same in 2021.
Is technology to blame? The answer seems to be: it depends how we use it. Using technology to arrange real meetings, or to have deep conversations with people we care about, can help. But passive scrolling, comparing our lives with others' perfect photos, and replacing face-to-face time with screens seems to make many people feel more disconnected.
The good news is that small actions matter. Sending a message to an old friend, talking to a neighbour, joining a club or volunteering can all help. Often, someone just needs to make the first move.
True or false?
- The report said about half of American adults had experienced loneliness.
- Loneliness has no effect on physical health.
- The UK and Japan appointed ministers for loneliness.
- The article says all technology use makes us lonely.
- Small actions, like talking to a neighbour, can help.
What do you think?
- Are you surprised that loneliness can be as harmful as smoking?
- Should governments have a minister for loneliness?
- How do you use technology to feel more connected, not less?
- Which small action could you take this week?
