What happens when people quit social media?

What would happen if you deleted your social media for a month? In 2018, a team of economists from Stanford and New York University decided to find out. They paid about 1,500 Facebook users to deactivate their accounts for four weeks, and compared them with users who kept going as normal.

The results were interesting. People who quit Facebook gained about an hour of free time every day. They spent more of it offline, for example watching TV alone or with friends and family. They followed the news less, and on political topics they became slightly less polarised.

Did they become happier? A little. On average, they reported slightly better wellbeing: more life satisfaction and a bit less anxiety and depression. The effect was not huge, but it was clear.

And what happened after the four weeks? Most people went back to Facebook, but many used it less than before. Some said that the break had shown them how much time they were spending on it.

The researchers stress that social media also has real benefits: it helps people stay in touch, find communities and get information. But the experiment suggests that many of us would feel a little better, and have more time, if we used it less.

  5. After the experiment, many people used Facebook less.

  2. What would you do with an extra hour a day?
  3. Do you think social media makes people more polarised?
  4. What are the real benefits of social media for you?
