Can money buy happiness?
Most people believe that more money would make them happier. But is it true? In 2010, two famous economists, Daniel Kahneman and Angus Deaton, studied the answers of nearly half a million Americans. They found that daily happiness went up with income, but only up to about $75,000 a year. After that, it seemed to stop growing.
Then, in 2021, a younger researcher, Matthew Killingsworth, published a new study using people's answers on a phone app during their day. He found that, for most people, happiness kept rising with income, with no clear limit. Instead of arguing, the scientists did something unusual: they worked together. In 2023 they published a joint study with an explanation. For most people, more money does mean more happiness. But for the unhappiest group, extra money stops helping after a certain point, because their problems, like illness or loss, can't be solved with money.
Other research shows that how we spend matters too. Studies suggest that spending money on experiences, like trips or concerts, tends to make people happier than buying things. And a well-known study by Elizabeth Dunn and her colleagues found that people who spent money on others felt happier than people who spent the same amount on themselves.
Money also buys something less visible: time and peace of mind. Paying for help with boring tasks, or having savings for emergencies, can reduce stress a lot.
So the answer seems to be: money can't buy everything, but if you use it well, it can buy quite a lot of happiness.
