Are people really more productive at home?
Long before the pandemic, a large Chinese travel company decided to run an experiment. Stanford economist Nicholas Bloom helped them randomly choose call-centre employees to work from home for nine months, while others stayed in the office.
The results surprised everyone. The home workers were about 13% more productive. They took fewer breaks and fewer sick days, and they worked their full hours because they didn't have to commute. Fewer of them quit their jobs. The company also saved a lot of money on office space.
But there was a twist. At the end of the experiment, the company offered everyone the choice. About half of the home workers chose to return to the office. Why? They felt lonely. They missed their colleagues and the small talk. Some also worried that if their manager never saw them, they would never be promoted, and in fact, home workers were promoted less often.
Later research has shown similar mixed results. Remote work is great for focused tasks, saves time and money, and gives people more freedom. However, it can make teamwork, training new employees and creative brainstorming harder.
That's why many experts now believe the answer is not "home or office" but "both": hybrid work, where people come to the office for meetings and teamwork, and stay at home for deep, quiet work.
True or false?

What do you think?
- Are you more productive at home or in the office? Why?
- Would you choose home or office if you were one of the workers in the experiment?
- Which jobs could never be done remotely?
- How can remote workers avoid feeling isolated?
