Can an app find you love?

For most of history, people met their partners through family, friends, school, work or church. Then the internet arrived. A study led by the sociologist Michael Rosenfeld at Stanford University found that by 2017, meeting online had become the most common way for couples in the USA to meet. About four in ten couples said they met online, far more than through friends.

Dating apps promise a lot: thousands of possible partners, filters for age and interests, and the chance to meet someone you would never meet in your own town. For shy people, or people who are too busy to go out, they can be a real help.

But there is a problem psychologists call the "paradox of choice". When we have too many options, we find it harder to decide and we feel less happy with our choice. Some app users keep swiping because they think someone better is waiting on the next screen. Many say they feel tired of dating and stop enjoying it.

There are also questions about honesty. Photos can be edited, profiles can be exaggerated, and it is hard to feel chemistry through a screen.

Still, millions of happy couples started with a swipe. Perhaps the app is just a door. What happens after you walk through it is still up to two real people.

  5. The article says couples who meet online are never happy.
3.3

What do you think?

  1. Would you use a dating app, or recommend one to a friend? Why?
  2. How do most couples you know meet?
  3. Have you experienced the "paradox of choice" in other areas of life (shopping, films, jobs)?
  4. Is it possible to feel chemistry online?

Ideas against

Many couples say they "just knew" from the first moment. Chemistry is real and powerful. Lots of long marriages started with one look.

Round 1: give your real opinion for 1–2 minutes. Round 2: defend the opposite side for 1 minute. Use: Personally, I believe... · I can't imagine... · You can't deny that... · That reminds me of a couple I know...
