The first text message

Read the text. Hover over the dotted words for help.

What was the first text message ever sent?

The first text message was sent on 3 December 1992. An engineer called Neil Papworth sent it from a computer to a mobile phone. The message was only two words: "Merry Christmas".

The phone belonged to a manager at Vodafone, Richard Jarvis. His phone had no keyboard, so he could not answer. It was only possible to receive the message.

Early text messages were short. A message could have only 160 characters, and that is why people started to use short forms of words.

Today technology is changing very fast. People are sending messages and photos every second, and phones are becoming smarter. Some people say that we use our phones too much, but others say phones help us learn and work.
