How did rolled-up paper become a stethoscope?

In 1816, a French doctor, René Laennec, had a problem. He wanted to listen to the heart of a young woman, but at that time doctors put their ear on the patient's chest. This did not seem polite to him.

Laennec had an idea. He rolled up some paper into a tube, put one end on the woman's chest and the other end to his ear. He was surprised: he heard the heart much better!

Later, he made a wooden tube and called it a “stethoscope”. The word comes from two Greek words: “chest” and “look” or “see”.

Today, doctors use stethoscopes with two ear pieces, and there are even electronic ones.
