Why did a laughing emoji become Word of the Year?

In 2015, Oxford Dictionaries chose a picture as its “Word of the Year”. It was not a word. It was the emoji called “Face with Tears of Joy”.

Why? Emojis became a normal part of messages. The dictionary experts said that the emoji showed how people express feelings in a fast, visual way.

The word “emoji” comes from Japanese. “E” means picture and “moji” means letter. The first emojis appeared in Japan in the late 1990s.

Today, people send billions of emojis every day. A small yellow face can say “I'm happy”, “I'm sorry” or “I'm nervous”.
