What happens when a volcano closes the sky?

In April 2010, a volcano in Iceland, called Eyjafjallajökull, woke up. It sent a huge cloud of ash into the sky.

Planes cannot fly through ash, so many countries in Europe closed their airspace for several days. Airlines cancelled more than 100,000 flights, and about 10 million passengers could not travel as planned.

People slept in airports, waited in long queues and looked for other ways home. Some took trains, buses and ferries, and some shared taxis.

After a few days, the ash cloud moved away and the planes flew again.

What do you do when your travel plans go wrong?
