A lucky mistake

Read the text. Hover over the dotted words for help.

Can a mistake change the world?

In 1928, the Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming went on holiday. Before he left, he did not clean some dishes with bacteria in his laboratory.

When he came back, he noticed something strange. Mould grew on one dish, and around the mould there were no bacteria.

Fleming realised that the mould made a substance which killed bacteria. He called it penicillin.

In the 1940s, other scientists worked on penicillin and made it into a medicine. Today, antibiotics help millions of people.
