How did a Ukrainian song become “Carol of the Bells”?
Every winter, millions of people hear the song “Carol of the Bells”. But many people don't know that it comes from Ukraine.
The music was written by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych. His choir first sang the song in Kyiv in 1916. The original song is called “Shchedryk”. It is a short New Year song about a little bird.
In 1936, an American, Peter Wilhousky, wrote new English words for the melody. They are about bells, and the song got a new name: “Carol of the Bells”.
Today, you can hear the melody in films, adverts and concerts all over the world. Four short notes repeat again and again, and they are easy to remember.
