Why do prices end in .99?
Look at the price tags in a shop: 99 hryvnias, 499, 9.99 euros. Why don't shops just write 100 or 500 or 10? It's only one small difference!
The answer is in our brains. We read numbers from left to right, and the first number is the most important for us. So 9.99 starts with 9, and it "feels" much cheaper than 10.00, even though the difference is only one cent. Scientists call this the "left-digit effect".
Some studies show that prices ending in 9 can really help shops sell more. Many people also think a .99 price means there is a discount, even when there isn't one!
Expensive shops often do the opposite. In luxury shops, prices are usually round, like 1,000 or 2,500. A round price feels more elegant and "high quality".
So next time you see 999 hryvnias, remember: it's really 1,000!
