Why do onions make us cry?
Many people love onions in their food, but nobody loves cutting them. Why do onions make us cry?
When you cut an onion, you break its cells. This makes a special gas. The gas goes up into the air and reaches your eyes. Your eyes don't like it, so they make tears to wash it away. It's not sadness, it's chemistry!
Are there any tricks to stop the tears? People have a lot of ideas. Some people put the onion in the fridge for 30 minutes before cutting it, because a cold onion makes less gas. Others say: use a very sharp knife, because a sharp knife breaks fewer cells. Some people even wear swimming goggles in the kitchen!
Scientists in Japan worked for years to make an onion that doesn't make people cry, and now there are "tearless" onions in some shops.
But maybe a few tears are OK. Onions make our soups, salads and sauces much tastier!
