Soap or salad?

Why do some people hate coriander?

Coriander is a green herb. It's popular in Mexican, Indian and Thai food. Many people love it. But for some people, it tastes like soap! Why?

Scientists think part of the answer is in our genes. Some people have a gene that makes them very sensitive to a smell in coriander. That smell is also in soap. So for these people, coriander salad tastes like a bathroom!

Our genes affect other tastes too. Some people are "supertasters". They have more taste buds on their tongue. For them, bitter food like broccoli, dark chocolate or black coffee tastes very strong. That's why some people really hate vegetables, and it's not just because they are fussy!

But genes are not everything. We also learn to like food. Many children hate coffee and spicy food, but many adults love them. When we try a food many times, we often start to like it.

So if you don't like something now, try it again in a few years. Your taste might change!
