What do cats do all day?

What do cats do all day? A lot of people think that cats only sleep. It is almost true: a cat sleeps for about twelve to sixteen hours a day. A kitten or an old cat sleeps even more. But a cat doesn't sleep all the time.

When a cat is awake, it plays, cleans itself and looks for food. A cat washes its fur with its tongue many times a day. It doesn't like to be dirty. Cats also hunt. A pet cat doesn't need to hunt for food, but it still plays with toys and chases small things.

Many cats are most active early in the morning and in the evening. They don't always sleep at night like us. In the day, a cat often takes a nap in a warm place, for example at a window.

Cats don't like change, and many of them don't like water. A cat doesn't need a lot of things: food, water, a warm place and a friend.

Grammar for speaking

Present Simple negative

For I, you, we and they, use don't + verb: I don't eat meat. For he, she and it, use doesn't + verb: She doesn't eat meat. After don't and doesn't, use the base verb without -s.

I don't sleep in the afternoon. You don't like water. We don't have a dog. They don't work. He doesn't get up early. The cat doesn't like water.

Do not mix

Do not use don't with he, she or it. Do not add -s after doesn't. Do not use no or not before the verb alone.

✗ She don't sleep → She doesn't sleep. ✗ He doesn't likes → He doesn't like. ✗ I no eat → I don't eat.

Block 4 review

Use the grammar from this block.
