Reading
Read: a week at work
Monday–Friday — a business week
Monday. Laura sent a quotation to a new client. She wrote that if the client ordered before the end of the month, the company would give a 5% discount. The client asked if the price was inclusive of VAT, and she explained that it was not.
Tuesday. The team had a meeting. The agenda was long, but the chairperson kept the time. It was agreed that the launch would be moved to May, and Tom was asked to prepare a new budget.
Wednesday. A shipment was delayed at customs because some documents were missing. Laura told the customer what had happened and offered a small discount. The customer said that he understood.
Thursday. Laura gave a presentation. She said that sales had risen sharply from 200 to 350 units and that Instagram was the most successful channel. Her manager gave her positive feedback.
Friday. Laura sent a polite reminder about an overdue invoice. In the evening she thought: “I have learned a lot this year. By next year I will have become a team leader.”

How to use this section
This is the final simulation. Your tutor plays a client, a manager and a colleague during one business week. Use everything you have learned: conditionals, modals, the passive, reported speech, perfect tenses and polite language.
Monday — a quotation
Task: offer a price and a conditional discount to a new client.
Starter: "The unit price is 48 euros. If you order before the end of the month, we will give you a 5% discount. Is that acceptable?"
Tuesday — a meeting
Task: report a decision and give a task.
Starter: "It was agreed that the launch would be moved to May. Tom, could you prepare a new budget by Friday?"
Wednesday — a problem
Task: explain a delay and offer a solution.
Starter: "I am sorry to say that the shipment was delayed at customs because some documents were missing. We can offer a small discount."
Thursday — a presentation
Task: present three facts with trends and comparisons.
Starter: "Sales rose sharply from 200 to 350 units. Instagram is the most successful channel, and video is more engaging than photos."
Friday — a negotiation
Task: negotiate politely with a supplier.
Starter: "If we increased the order, would you consider a lower price? We would be grateful if you could give us a quotation."
Friday — a reminder
Task: call a client about an overdue invoice.
Starter: "I am calling about Invoice 2051. We have not received the payment yet. Could you tell me when you will pay?"
Friday evening — your goals
Task: tell your tutor what you have learned and what you will have done.
Starter: "I have learned a lot on this course. By next year I will have improved my English a lot, and I will have become more confident at work."
